Know A Bit More About San Francisco

San Francisco lies in North California and is the cultural, commercial and financial center of the region. It is a popular tourist destination. It lies on a natural bay. The hilly, green city endures frequent earthquakes. San Andreas Fault present in the city is one of the most important reasons behind the frequent earthquakes experienced by the city. But the skyscrapers present in the city is able to withstand it. Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most visited landmarks of San Francisco. The city covers an area of 600 .6 km sq.  It is a very densely populated city. Many islands like Treasure Island and Buena Island are part of this city. There are many hills present in the city; the tallest among them is Mount Davidson.The city is known for its architecture and scenic beauty.


1.Golden Gate Bridge

Golden Gate Bridge is basically a suspension bridge over the Golden Gate strait. It lies between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It is 2.7 km long. It is made up of steel. It is one of the wonders of the modern world. The bridge links San Francisco to Marin Country. Both the ends of the bridge offer great views. One can see Vista Point from the North while the other end provides a view of Alcatraz and San Francisco. You can have fun on the bridge by both riding a bike and walking. The bridge has a very ancient look. A walk down the bridge is highly recommended. You can have a view of the bridge from beneath by sailing under it. It is a masterpiece of art with stunning views.


It is an island located in the San Francisco Bay. It is a National Historic Landmark. One can find the oldest operating lighthouse in the island. The area covered by the island is 22 hectares. There are many other landmarks present in the island. The island has a prison, which will give you a great idea of the feeling in living here abandoned. You can spend as much time as you want in the island. You can hire a guide to explain you the history and story behind the prison. You can also take an audio tour for the place. The view from the island is stunning. If you are lucky you might see seals during a boat trip. A tram is also available to take you to the top of the rock. There are many art pieces located in the various parts of the prison to bring history in life. Wear comfortable shoes while visiting the place as there are small hills where you can hike.

3.San Francisco Bay

This area drains water from forty percent of California. One has to enter the San Francisco Bay by Golden Gate Bridge. The bay covers an area of 1600 square miles. There are total five large islands in San Francisco bay. One can do Kayaking and swimming in the water. Other activities offered the bay are hiking, biking and sailing. At night, you can have a look on Golden Gate Bridge. You can have an amazing long walk from the beginning of the pier. You can enjoy seeing a lot of seals in the water. The hills present in the area are steep. There are many operas, theatre and dining places present in the area. 

4.Golden Gate Park

Golden Gate Park is a large urban park present in San Francisco that covers an area of 1,017 acres. It remains open throughout the year and there is no entree fee. It is a great park for relaxing in the middle of the city. You will find many joggers and bikers in the park. It provides an excellent view of a bridge. There are even museums present in the park. A Japanese tea garden is also present within the park. Whether you want to gout with your kids, love or hang out with your friends, this is the best place to do it. The Palace of Fine Arts is a beautiful building. There is also a glasshouse present inside the park that shelters many orchids and other hothouse flowers. The Academy of the Science and Young Museum are other great places present in the park.

5.Palace of Fine Arts

Palace of Fine Arts is a museum designed to look like a Roman ruin. This place in San Francisco is built in an artificial small lagoon. The place is scenic and romantic. The place is not far from the waterfront. Golden Gate Bridge lies near the place.  The building alone is a treasure plus the history behind the place is amazing. The place is a perfect combination of great architecture and serene environment. It was one of the sole buildings that survived the Panama-Pacific Exposition. It looks beautiful during the night all lit up. A pave path meander leads you to the entrance of the museum. This folly was rebuilt again after 1915.

6.Cable Car Museum

Cable Car Museum gives you information about the history about the San Francisco cable car system. Cable cars displayed in the museum includes Sutter Street Railway and Clay Street Hail Railroad. It also explains the inner working of cable cars. All the cable cars are powered by this museum. It also has an exhibition of the impact of 1906 earthquake. A good short movie is also shown. You actually get to see the big wheels of the cable car here. There are a lot of machinery involved in the museum. It is very informative. It is not just a museum but a working hub of the cable system. 

7.Fisherman’s Wharf

It is a popular tourist destination in San Francisco. A lot of small restaurants and pubs are present near the area. Numerous street acts are fun and entertaining. It is best known for the location of Pier 39. It is a commercial place. There are lot many of things to do and see. There are plenty of bars for drinking and places to relax. There are many arcade ‘museum’ present on the road. This place looks more beautiful during the night with lights on. It is a great place for families and children.

8.Coit Tower

Coit Tower is 64 metres tall tower. It was built 1933. The view from the Coit tower is wonderful. From the tower, one can see Bay Bridge, Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf and Golden Gate Bridge. The top of the tower is windy. You have to pay $8 to reach the top of the tower. The ascent is very steep. Tower highlighting the mural is wonderful. The elevator gives you a view of 360°. You can view the murals in the down floor while waiting for the elevators. 

9.Little Italy

It is a beautiful place to stroll. There are many beautiful churches and houses on the way. You can relax on the Washington Square Park. The cafes present in the area have an authenticated look and are lovely. Restaurants are the predominant features of the place. This place is quite good for a quick meal. They have a taste of mixed culture. There are many trees present in the area. The place will remind you of sidewalk cafes in Paris. The place is charming and well- maintained. It is a certainly a place to visit during your trip.

10.Painted Ladies

Painted Ladies is a term used for Victorian and Edwardian houses. The houses are painted in three or more colours. The neighbourhood has several houses with beautiful architecture. A show takes place in a house that is only a few blocks away from Broderick. There is a park just across the street from the Painted Ladies (Alamo Square) which gives a great view of the houses. Find your way into the park and up the hill for an even more, incredible view of the San Francisco skyline behind the row of houses! You can expect a lot of hills in the place.
